Broken Bones And Compression Fractures

Broken Bones And Compression Fractures

Human bones are very resilient. Many bone fractures heal well, allowing the patient to go on and resume normal activities and way of life.

However, some fractures are more serious and never fully heal. When bones shatter or are broken all the way through, the patient may experience chronic pain, decreased joint motion, muscle weakness and reduced flexibility.

At Nicolet Law Accident & Injury Lawyers, we understand the complex nature of bone fractures. We evaluate the extent of these fractures and seek compensation to cover the current and long-term expenses associated with the injury.

Bone Fractures

Broken Bones And Compression Fractures

A bone fracture can occur anywhere in the body and vary greatly in terms of severity.

Stable fractures, for example, are generally less serious because the bone is very slightly out of place. In a compound fracture, the fractured bone breaks through the skin.

Treatment for bone fractures can vary but may involve cast immobilization, rehabilitation or surgery involving the insertion of pins and screws to stabilize the bone.

Unfortunately, some bone fractures never fully heal. Some victims may experience long-term pain and weakness in the area of a fracture. The injury may make it difficult or impossible to perform job duties.

A bone fracture may occur as the result of a car accident, motorcycle accident, slip-and-fall accident, or another type of accident.

Broken Bones In The Hands

Broken Bones In The Hands

Hand fractures are very common among car accident victims as well as those who have been injured in slip-and-fall accidents. Instinctively, humans use their hands to brace for impact. This makes the hands vulnerable to high amounts of stress and pressure, which can result in a fracture in the hands or wrist.

Individuals who have suffered broken fingers, knuckles, wrists or crushed bones in an accident may be eligible for significant compensation. These injuries can have lifelong effects, and multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation may be required to recover.

Understanding Compression Fractures

A compression fracture usually refers to a specific type of fracture in the spinal cord.

The spinal cord is made up of vertebrae separated by cushiony discs. Compression fractures usually start out as small, hairline fractures in the vertebrae. Over time, or upon impact, the vertebrae may crack and collapse.

Compression fractures are more common in people who have osteoporosis, or the thinning and weakening of the bones. However, trauma or forceful impact to the spinal cord, such as that caused by a vehicle accident, can cause a compression fracture in individuals who do not have osteoporosis. This may occur in a car accident, in a falling accident or another accident that stresses the vertebrae to its breaking point.
