That joyous expression when a child unwraps a cool toy is priceless. But the adults have to do a little homework. Just because a toy is sold does not mean it is safe.
Consumer safety group W.A.T.C.H. has unveiled its “10 Worst Toys of 2018” warning. Share this with friends and family so they don’t make a tragic mistake, or so they at least understand the dangers.

World Against Toys Causing Harm released its 46th annual list of hazardous toys. The nonprofit W.A.T.C.H. is not anti-fun or anti-Christmas. They just want parents to know what they’re buying because of potential or proven hazards. Below is a sample of 2018 toys they recommend against:
- Marvel Black Panther Slash Claw – These toy gloves, marketed to kids 5 and up, have retractable plastic claws with sharp tips. Although the warning label says “Do not hit or swing at people or other animals,” it practically screams eye injury or facial scars.
- Vtech Zoo Jamz Xylophone – Although marketed to kids as young as 18 months, the slim 9-inch-long mallet handle is a choking or eye-poking hazard.
- Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Superstar Blade – As if a toy sword with sharp-edged “flames” isn’t dangerous enough, this one is spring-loaded!
- Cabbage Patch Kids Dance Time Doll – These soft, plump dolls are made for toddlers but this one has a removable headband that could be a choking hazard.
- Nerf Vortex VTX Praxis Blaster – This pump action gun shoots hard foam discs at high velocity that can cause serious eye injury especially in close combat.

Read the labels and use common sense
It’s not possible to protect kids from every possible hazard. Many toys can cause injury if used in a dangerous way. But at least we can avoid handing them toys that are known or likely to cause harm.
In addition to the “10 worst toys” list, consumer groups urge parents to be vigilant for: small parts or removable accessories that present choking hazards to young kids; any toy that contains magnets or small batteries which can cause organ damage if ingested, and “slime” toys that contain toxic levels of boron which can cause chemical burns. Also pay attention to recommended ages.
