Moving Forward With PTSD

Sometimes a traumatic event never quite ends. While post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is most commonly associated with military veterans, our attorneys know that its reach extends much further. Anyone who has experienced intense trauma – abuse survivors, police officers, natural disaster survivors – can deal with lasting scars for the rest of their lives. In some cases, the effects are not enough to derail a person’s career, but in other cases they are.

At Nicolet Law Office, we are committed to helping those people continue their lives with as much dignity and independence as possible, which often means applying for Social Security Disability benefits.

We help people throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. You will only pay if we are successful.

How Do I Know If I Have PTSD?

The symptoms of PTSD are unique to every individual that has it. However, they typically fall into four broad categories:

  • Flashbacks, invasive memories, panic attacks and disturbing dreams
  • Unpredictable emotional reactions, such as sudden anger, tremendous guilt or shame, and self-destructive behavior
  • Rigid avoidance of people, places and things that are associated with the painful memories
  • Deeply negative self-esteem, resulting in anti-social behavior, isolation and despair

If you have not received a medical diagnosis, we will refer you to a doctor before starting your application. Physicians at the Veteran’s Administration (VA) hospitals are familiar with PTSD, but some civilian doctors are as well.

What We Need To Prove

In every application for benefits through Social Security Disability, we must show that your condition is not only diagnosed by a doctor but actively prevents you from holding any kind of regular employment as well. Without documentation of these things, your claim may be denied. People with PTSD often experience:

  • Difficulty concentrating and finishing tasks
  • Trouble interacting with co-workers
  • A reduction in what they can do in a day
  • Extended and frequent breakdowns that hinder their work
